nin, trent reznor
I’m happy to observe that many of my recent blog visitors have been viewing my posts about Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor.
One item of particular interest to me is the progress that Trent (T.R.) has made as an individual.
As a young person, I was filled with a lot of rage, particularly against God for the death of my father. My decline into substance abuse was fueled and often justified by Trent’s music.
After being a fundamentalist Christian for many years and leaving the “faith” due to ethical issues particularly with the Old Testament but also the “New”, I returned to being a TR fan and was pleased to find that Trent had also “grown up.”
In his music I now find a “righteous indignation” against unethical behavour, social injustice, and totalitarian authority. I see a man who regrets somewhat his “blind rage” and is trying to change the world through his artwork and message. Songs like “Erasure”, which at first glance seemed to be a dark and hateful song, have been re-interpreted through the live video presentation to communicate a deep and strong ethic against war and hate.
At the same time, through the fan videos on the nin.com web site I see a lot of horrible images and messages that I know TR is not proud of and that do not represent the undertones of his music. Because of this and the messages associated with his early art I am leary to identify myself as a NIN fan.
So, I am writing this in hopes that some of you who read this and other posts regarding NIN musicĀ will subscribe to this blog at least for the purpose of sharing how TR has affected your life in a positive way.
Particularly I would like to know how you interpret recent NIN lyrics. The music is deeply subject to interpretation, I have experienced this personally as tragedy in my life, and social / political angst has changed my interpretation of particular songs many times in my life.
Please post lyrics and your interpretation of them on this blog. I hope for an enlightened discussion.
