Barack Obama and me, on Marijuana
Barack admits that he did inhale marijuana “frequently” and “that was the point”.
In this next video he supports decriminalization and rejects legalization of marijuana:
Barack does state that he is not “for legalization”. The difference between legalization and decriminalization is anything but marginal. The latter policy would likely result in marijuana possession under a certain amount a ticket-able offense similar to a traffic violation.
While I am against the legalization and decriminalization of hard drugs such as heroin, cocaine and LSD, I believe that the decriminalization of marijuana is a move in the right direction for several reasons.
Marijuana is much less harmful to the body and mind that alcohol. Numerous studies have shown that a person under the influence of marijuana has much better motor skills than one who is inebriated. Alcohol lowers inhibitions and causes the user to become annoying and sometimes violent, marijuana users generally become more reserved and cautious. Tens of thousands of lives are destroyed every year because of alcohol abuse. Drunk driving accidents, alcohol poisoning and liver disease plague our nation. We are a culture of excess, and excess with alcohol is deadly. Not so with marijuana.
It is important that our laws are fair, consistent and uphold human liberty. Our nation was built upon the principle of individual freedom. The fact that marijuana is presently considered a criminal act while alcohol use is not is a gross violation of liberty as well as a clear contradiction. It is not illegal because it was found to be dangerous through scientific research, rather it is illegal because of the imposed morality of the far right.
As Americans, we should support freedom, even when we disagree with it. To stick one’s nose in someone else’s business and impose our morality on them is entirely un-American. Such bigotry should be firmly and aggressively opposed.
