On Eternity

June 16th, 2008 by Justin

A friend of mine sent me this quote from a magazine article that made her think of me. It said, “If we looked at mortality as the whole of existence, then pain, sorrow, failure, and short life would be calamity. But if we look upon life as an eternal thing stretching far into premortal and onto the eternal past death future, then all happenings may be put in proper perspective.”

I wanted to share my response with you guys here it is:

Absolutely whether we see life as eternal or limited to this life has enormous consequences on our world view and our behavior in this life. The belief that life on this planet is short and relatively unimportant while comforting to many, also leads to much unnecessary suffering. In any case, I don’t think we should ever accept something as fact just because it makes us feel good.
