My Objections to Christianity
The Christian bible says that all humankind is under the curse of Adam and without repentance and faith in Christian Dogma every man will be tortured for an eternity.
First this is built upon the lie that man was created by the hand of God from dirt about 6,000 years ago, that he was tempted by his rib-wife by a talking snake and was plunged into a state of perpetual sinfulness from eating a piece of fruit.
We now KNOW without question from a mountain of evidence that man (in his current form) has been on this planet for at least 80,000 years, probably longer, and our ancestors have been here for millions of years. I cannot and will not argue with people about this, it is basically scientific FACT. If a person is unaware of this and wants evidence they can pick up one of the thousands of books on the topic, use the internet, consult biologists, anthropologists, geologists etc… There is really no excuse for being ignorant of these things in an age where knowledge is so readily available to everyone.
The foundation of Christianity is our need for redemption because of this event.
Now you could say that this event doesn’t have to be literally true because we all experience a “personal fall”. I grant that. But taking such a liberal stance on the inherency of scripture as admitting the story was not literal truth but “poetic” or “metaphorical” greatly reduces the authority of scripture. Additionally, it was clearly the intent of the author that the story be interpreted as literally true. The same thing applies to 7 day and young earth creationism. To gain a true understanding of any literary work we must ask ourselves what was the intent of the author and how would it have been interpreted by the people it was written to.
Now, let’s presume just for the sake of argument, that either due to Adamic fall or personal fall we are in need of redemption. (That’s a huuuuge jump with lots of implications but i could be here all day)
In this case all men get tortured for eternity unless they believe in the unverifiable and often contradictory stories of the Bible. If we are really in the trouble the Bible says we are in and God really cared to get us out of it, why would he choose as the medium to extend His grace belief in an unverifiable story?
I mean, this is basically superstition that God is rewarding. Further, people who live righteous lives and pursue real verifiable truth get tortured for an eternity, while the child molester who prays for forgiveness at the end of his life gets heaven.
Ok so that’s 1.
The other main problem I have is that many of the commandments from “God” in Leviticus and Deuteronomy are entirely immoral. For example if someone attempts to lead you away from Yahweh (which I am doing right now), you are instructed to pick up rocks and murder them (in some cases and their wife and children and animals too). If on your wedding night you find that your bride is not a virgin, you are commanded to pick up rocks and murder her. If someone is a homosexual, you guessed it, murder them. Genocide is also commanded in the old testament against the Caananites, Hivites, Perizites etc. etc. etc. God (allegedly) commanded the destruction of entire nations, their men, women, children and animals.
Christians easily brush this off by saying that that was the old covenant and we don’t follow those rules any more. Well no shit we don’t, and why not? Because it’s insane! Did Jesus abolish the law? No, rather he said, “I did not come to abolish the law but fulfill it” and “whoever teaches other to obey the law will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” What is the difference (to God) of a couple of thousand years? He says “I am Yahweh I do not change.”, and it is said of him that “He is the same yesterday, today and forever”.
We should all be grateful that Christians do not really get their morals from the Bible. If they did the results would be far more horrific than anything we have seen from the Muslim world. Imagine a world where people went around murdering atheists, agnostics, homosexuals and non-virgins.
I would argue that most Christians do not even get their morals from the New Testament. For example Paul clearly teaches that women are to wear head coverings (like the Muslims) and that they are not to have authority over a man because they were the first to sin in the garden. Do you see how belief in the Bible can suppress women’s rights?
Isn’t it obvious that we don’t really get our morals from the Bible, but we ARE moral, and we choose which scriptures agree with our morals and the others we reject.
